Ocean Business 2011 Preview

The third edition of Ocean Business will take place in Southampton, UK, from 5 – 7 April. The organisation anticipates more than 4000 visitors at the event, with 309 exhibitors from 19 countries. Ocean Business 2011 will be bigger than the previous editions, but will retain the cosy element, with exhibitors all taking relatively small stands. This time the organisation will have more vessels coming in, and there will be a full training and demonstration programme again. Meet the Hydro International Team at Oceanology International (R-Y)

In the third week of March, the entire marine world will be gathering in London, as this is where the biannual Oceanology International event is taking place. The exhibition and the conference bring together technological and scientific developments. With over 550 exhibitors and a state of the art conference programme OI12 is definitely the place to be. RTK River Bathymetry in Africa

From Syledis and Tide Gauge to RTK GPS Water-level Corrected Survey
This article describes the installation of a hardware and software system for bathymetric surveys in the maritime part of the Congo River. The ‘Regie des Voies Maritimes’ (RVM) is a Congolese public administration in charge of an operational navigation river lane in the Congo maritime reach. The Congo River has the second lar­gest flow in the world and is 4,700km long. The New IHO S-102 Standard

Charting a New Frontier for Bathymetry
Soundings and contours are the only official way data producers can push bathymetric information to the wide hydrographic community. The introduction of the S-102 standard for bathymetry will enable many possibilities within the community of bathymetry users. Liaising with the International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) TSMAD working group, the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) and the US Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) led the development and practical testing of this revolutionary standard, officially called the Bathymetric Surface Product Specification S 102. Sediment Waves

Geohazard or Geofeature?
The term ‘sediment waves’ was fully established in a special issue of Marine Geology and refers to large-scale depositional bedforms in various parts of the world’s oceans. These undulating objects usually have tens of metres to a few kilometres in wavelength and a height of several metres. The genesis is believed to be a near-bottom current, a turbidite current or both. The main issue about the sedimentary wavy features was, and is, to distinguish them from soft sediment deformations (creep). Altitude and Dynamic Error in TPE and CUBE

Total Propagated Error (TPE) and Combined Uncertainty Bathymetric Estimator (CUBE) help automate data cleaning and filtering. This paper discusses the effect of using altitude in place of heave for survey data processing and that of using error estimates in TPE and CUBE for both variables. Final hydrographic data quality is examined.
