RTK River Bathymetry in Africa

From Syledis and Tide Gauge to RTK GPS Water-level Corrected Survey
This article describes the installation of a hardware and software system for bathymetric surveys in the maritime part of the Congo River. The ‘Regie des Voies Maritimes’ (RVM) is a Congolese public administration in charge of an operational navigation river lane in the Congo maritime reach. The Congo River has the second largest flow in the world and is 4,700km long. RVM maintains the conditions for commercial navigation in the so-called ‘maritime area’, from the mouth to Matadi harbour, over a distance of 150km. The estuary is the only maritime border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with... (read more)

Altitude and Dynamic Error in TPE and CUBE

Total Propagated Error (TPE) and Combined Uncertainty Bathymetric Estimator (CUBE) help automate data cleaning and filtering. This paper discusses the effect of using altitude in place of heave for survey data processing and that of using error estimates in TPE and CUBE for both variables. Final hydrographic data quality is examined. Total Propagated Error (TPE) and Combined Uncertainty Bathymetric Estimator (CUBE) are designed for use with hydrographic survey data to minimise subjective user intervention and help automate data cleaning and filtering. With the trend in hydrographic surveying towards objective estimation of data quality, these methods rely heavily on error estimates... (read more)

The New IHO S-102 Standard

Charting a New Frontier for Bathymetry
Soundings and contours are the only official way data producers can push bathymetric information to the wide hydrographic community. The introduction of the S-102 standard for bathymetry will enable many possibilities within the community of bathymetry users. Liaising with the International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) TSMAD working group, the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) and the US Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) led the development and practical testing of this revolutionary standard, officially called the Bathymetric Surface Product Specification S 102. In partnership with IIC Technologies, GeoNet Technologies, and CARIS, CHS created one of the first prototypes of S 102 datasets, using the... (read more)

Minimising Offshore Survey Product Liability

In this article, offshore survey products are meant in the broadest sense. Not just survey, navigation and positioning, but the purpose or project that the dependent results are used for. No work in the offshore industry can proceed efficiently without good positioning data and survey information. From the initial 2D and eventual 3D surveys, through to the commissioning of the offshore installation and pipelines, offshore survey is the link between the various pieces of the complex puzzle. In this article, offshore survey products are meant in the broadest sense. Not just survey, navigation and positioning, but the purpose or project... (read more)

GNSS and Hydrography

Multi-interview (1)
None of us can anymore imagine hydrographic work without satellite positioning. Improvements in performance since the first launch at the end of the70s have made it suitable for more and more applications and developments are ongoing. A GPS modernisation programme is upgrading both satellite performance and ground infrastructure, the Russian Glonass modernisation programme will upgrade performance to GPS level, Galileo test satellites GIOVE A and B are performing well and due to become available in a few years, and there is increasing augmentation system coverage. Time for Hydro International to question some experts on these developments in relation to our... (read more)

Snow Crab Tracking Using Wave Gliders

New Technology Bringing Science and Industry Together
Coastal communities around the globe are seeking better ways to understand and manage regional ecosystems. They depend on the ocean to sustain economic opportunities, ensure food security and safeguard fragile environments and species. For harvesters, scientists and government organisations in Nova Scotia, Canada, timely, accurate and comprehensive data on movements of valued species as crab is essential for designing effective fishery management regimes. Ocean Tracking Network (OTN), the Canadian government and local harvesters have been tagging and monitoring aquatic animals for years. But not all tracking methods are practical or cost-effective for highly mobile, yet slow moving animals like snow... (read more)

Using the Apache Unmanned Survey Vessel

Techniques in Bathymetric Survey
This paper explores the various features of the Apache USV series for efficient seafloor-level mapping. The CHCNAV hydrographic survey software is used for data recording and analysis. It provides results in the form of 3D models of the ground, contours and depth. (This story is brought to you by CHCNAV) Bathymetry is the study and mapping of the seabed or lake bed. It consists of obtaining measurements of the depth of the ocean or lakes and is equivalent to the mapping of the Earth’s topography. In general, only limited information is known about the seabed and lake beds. Existing maps... (read more)

This Is How Airborne Multibeam Lidar Coastal Mapping in Paradise Is Done

Insights from the first commercial use of Fugro RAMMS
The Rapid Airborne Multibeam Mapping System, RAMMS, was developed over a period of three years before it was officially launched in the summer of 2018. Senior hydrographer Richard Goosen describes how Fugro used the system for coastal and nearshore mapping at the paradisal Turks and Caicos Islands. Senior hydrographer Richard Goosen describes how Fugro used the system for coastal and nearshore mapping at the paradisal Turks and Caicos Islands. In July 2018, Fugro embarked on a large-scale project to map the Turks and Caicos Islands for the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO). This landmark effort called for integrated,... (read more)

USV Completes First Autonomous Circumnavigation of Antarctica

High-quality and Reliable Data Is Needed for Research Use
A 7m (23ft) long, wind-powered unmanned surface vehicle (USV) has become the first unmanned system to circumnavigate Antarctica. Known as SD 1020 and equipped with a suite of science-grade sensors, the vehicle collected data in previously uncharted waters, enabling new key insights into ocean and climate processes. Known as SD 1020 and equipped with a suite of science-grade sensors, the vehicle collected data in previously uncharted waters, enabling new key insights into ocean and climate processes. USV SD 1020 left for the 196-day mission from Southport in Bluff, New Zealand, on 19 January 2019. It returned to the same port on 3 August after sailing over 22,000km (13,670 miles or 11,879 nautical miles) around Antarctica. During the mission, the vehicle survived freezing temperatures, 15m (50ft) waves, 130km/h (80mph) winds... (read more)

Ocean Floor to be Mapped by 2030

Hydro International interviews Shin Tani, chair of GEBCO Guiding Committee
The first Forum for Future of the Ocean Floor Mapping was held in Monaco from 15 to 17 June 2016. Some 200 delegates gathered, under the flag of General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO), to discuss the future of the mapping of the ocean floor, aiming to come up with a roadmap towards 100% coverage of a mapped ocean floor. GEBCO was established 113 years ago, also in Monaco. Hydro International talked with the chair of GEBCO Guiding Committee, former chief hydrographer of Japan, Shin Tani. Shin Tani is adamant about the need of sharing data to reach the goal... (read more)
