Variable-frequency Multibeam Echo Sounder

Teledyne Odom Hydrographic has launched the MB1 multibeam echo sounder. This 120° sonar operates on user-selectable frequencies from 170 kHz to 220 kHz. MB1 features phase and amplitude bottom detection, 24-bit water column backscatter data, sidescan, snippets, light weight titanium and acetal construction, optional integrated motion sensor and a GPS heading system.     By collaborating with Teledyne RDI's engineering team, Odom's platform can support all features required by today's multibeam users that are typically only found in expensive high-end systems. The MB1 is the first of several new products being released in 2012.   Odom will be demonstrating the... (read more)

Multibeam Echo Sounder For Swedish Icebreaker

Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a NOK20 million (US$2.81 million) contract to provide an EM 122 1ºx 1º multibeam hydrographic echo sounder and one 3º SBP 120 sub bottom profiler to the University of Stockholm and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation have financed the purchase together with the Swedish Research Council. The system is to be installed on the 107m long Icebreaker Oden. The EM 122 12 kHz multibeam echo sounder is designed to perform seabed mapping - bathymetry and seabed imagery - to full ocean depth with a high resolution, coverage and accuracy.... (read more)

ME70 Scientific Multibeam Echo Sounder Updates

Simrad, Norway, has released a significant update for its ME70 scientific multibeam echo sounder. A new software and hardware configuration improves accuracy and operating range while reducing maintenance costs and improving system reliability. With the new Simrad ME70 software 1.2.5, all beam forming is carried out on a powerful operator computer processor, meaning the system can run on a single computer. Previously, the Simrad ME70 required six dedicated beam-forming computers in the transceiver unit, which, following this update, are no longer needed. All new Simrad ME70s will be sold in the single computer configuration and Simrad offers an upgrade kit... (read more)

Echo Sounder Calibration Tool

HydroBar is a hydrographic tool for calibrating survey echo sounders during field surveys. A real-time sound velocimeter is combined with a sonar target (‘bar’) and Windows-based software which can run on a PC in the background of Hypack, HydroPro or other hydrographic software. In CAST (Profile) mode, an integral depth sensor enables the HydroBar to display and record sound velocity and temperature vs. depth. All data will be stored in a .VEL file for direct input into Hypack. In BAR CHECK mode, the software menu guides the user through simple steps to perform a bar check. Data is stored in... (read more)

MILSpec Echo Sounder Launched

Seafloor Systems has introduced the SonarMite MILSpec Echo Sounder. The SonarMite features a field-proven survey-grade echo sounder, bluetooth technology with Windows Pocket PC devices, smart transducer design with QA output and an internal rechargeable battery.   The SonarMite is a result of nearly two years' research and development to further extend the boundaries of shallow-water hydrographic surveying equipment. The release of the SonarMite instrument marks the next stage introducing a series of equipment designed around the WinSTRUMENT concept using the latest portable computer integrated with new measurement technologies.   (read more)

Submersible Echo-sounder Retrieval

Working with NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), the University of Washington recently retrieved a BioSonics DTX-SUB split-beam echo-sounder after a one-month deployment in northern Admiralty Inlet, WA. The unit was detecting, categorising and counting pelagic fish, invertebrate and marine mammal species in order to determine suitable locations for tidal energy turbines. The BioSonics DTX-SUB is an autonomous scientific echo sounder packaged in a subsea pressure housing with integrated power management and data storage systems.   "When it's down there, collecting data, it's completely self-contained. There's no line to the surface, no signal to the surface. It's entirely contained in... (read more)

SOA Selects ATLAS Multibeam Echo Sounder for Future Projects

The 3rd Institute of Oceanography of the State Oceanographic Administration (SOA) in Xiamen, China, have awarded Atlas Hydrographic a contract to supply an Atlas Hydrosweep multibeam echo sounder. The system with depth range capability of more than 2,000m will be used for hydrographic surveying from mid 2014. Besides its standard functions of recording high-accurate bathymetric data of the seafloor structure and the ability of recording up to 10,000 side scan values in parallel, the Hydrosweep MD/50 comes with its 4x multi-ping feature. In this operation mode up to four swaths can be generated simultaneously per ping using frequency modulation in... (read more)

IFREMER Approves Simrad ME70 Multibeam Echo Sounder

Following a series of extensive tests IFREMER (French Marine Institute) has accepted and approved the Simrad ME70 scientific multibeam echo sounder onboard the research ship Thalassa. The information from the ME70 will be used to increase the accuracy of biomass assessments, therefore providing a better understanding of marine life. Functionality, accuracy, and stability were tested onboard Thalassa under sometimes severe weather conditions off the coast of France. The ME70 passed the final tests and IFREMER has formally accepted delivery of this revolutionary multibeam echo sounder. Data from the ME70 collected during the sea acceptance tests has already provided new information... (read more)

Dual Head Echo Sounder Installation

MMT Group has purchased and installed a Kongsberg EM2040D dual head multi-beam echo sounder on its survey and ROV vessel IceBeam. By operating an EM 2040 dual head, MMT is even-better prepared to perform surveys that meet the IHO-S44 special order.   According to Kongsberg, this is the first multi-beam echo sounder to combine all of the advanced features of deepwater echo sounders to the near-bottom sounding environment. Such features include dual swath per ping to maintain a high survey speed; FM chirp to achieve a much longer range capability; complete roll, pitch and yaw stabilisation and near-field focusing both...
