This Is How an Ocean Robot is Deployed on an Ocean Robot

The Caravela AutoNaut, manufactured by UK-based firm AutoNaut, is part of a major international experiment to track the formation of clouds and their role in the climate system in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Barbados. The researchers will use combined AutoNaut and glider measurements to understand how the ocean temperatures affect the layer of air above, and how the winds and sunshine affect the top tens of metres of the ocean. One of the AutoNauts has been specially adapted in conjunction with the UK University of East Anglia (UEA) to carry and release an underwater Seaglider in remote and... (read more)

This is How an Unmanned Launch and Recovery System Operates

The smooth launch and recovery of a Hugin Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) has been demonstrated using a new system from H. Henriksen AS. Capable of being used by a wide range of small manned or un-manned auxiliary craft, the Henriksen Launch and Recovery System introduces a versatile new option for the operators of AUVs and UUVs. The lightweight Henriksen launch system can be deployed by any craft capable of supporting its weight and that of the AUV. The Hugin AUV used to test the system was 5.5 -metres long and weighed 780 kg yet with the Henriksen launch system, it... (read more)

“Blue technology industries will help the expansion of the hydrographic market”

A view of hydrographic technology and the market for 2020
In the last decade, there has been a steady march towards the automation of hydrographic data collection. Jim Gardiner, a Research Scientist at Valeport, views the technical and commercial challenges in hydrographic operations. In the last decade, there has been a steady march towards the automation of hydrographic data collection. Jim Gardiner, a Research Scientist at Valeport, views the technical and commercial challenges in hydrographic operations. In terms of multibeam technology, we’ve seen continual advancements from the main players such as Teledyne Reson, Kongsberg, R2Sonic and the emergence of Norbit. Alongside this, there has been a steady improvement of GPS, inertial positioning systems and acquisition/processing software. As the capability of these systems has improved, it has placed a focus on the importance of accurate and reliable sound velocity data. To achieve accurate bathymetry,... (read more)

Dutch Company Delivers Piling Template for Offshore Windfarm

Dutch-based Subsea technology company Seatools secured a contract from an undisclosed EPC player for the design and delivery of a piling template hydraulic and instrumentation system. The system will be used for pile installation during the construction of an offshore wind farm in Taiwan. Survey Equipment Pile installation will take place in the second quarter of 2020. During this phase, the pre-piling template will accurately position and guide the pin piles. Meanwhile, the integrated instrumentation package includes a wide range of survey equipment to monitor every step of the installation process in real-time. The package also enables post-pile installation surveys... (read more)

Volcano F is the Origin of the Floating Stones, Researchers Discovered

Video Included
Since August, a large accumulation of pumice has been drifting in the Southwest Pacific towards Australia. Researchers at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany), together with colleagues from Canada and Australia, have now identified the origin of this pumice raft. It is a so-far nameless underwater volcano in Tongan waters. The study has been published online in the International Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research. Some volcanic eruptions produce a very porous type of rock with a density so low that it floats: pumice. An unusually large amount of it is currently drifting in the Southwest Pacific towards... Big Data, Satellites and Artificial Intelligence

Every year, Geomares, the publisher of Hydro International, analyses the user data and behaviour of thousands of members of our global hydrographic and oceanographic communities. According to the latest findings of our survey, the use of big data, and the application of satellites and artificial intelligence will influence the market and operational activities and are expected to leave their mark on hydrographic and oceanographic work in the coming decade. Ocean Data and Mapping As in the last few years, market research and the opinions of our readers show that the USV market will continue to grow. With North America being... (read more)

Danish Hydrographic Office Turns to GIS For Automated Maritime Charting

A Radical Update Was Needed
Denmark has challenging seascapes to map and chart. It has a rich history of nautical charting that dates back to the seventeenth century, and many of its navigational products for Greenland were created in the 1960s. When GPS started to gain prominence, a radical update was needed. Apart from its 42-mile land border with Germany, the peninsular country of Denmark, with its scores of bays, straits, and fjords,  is surrounded almost entirely by the North and Baltic Seas. Denmark is also composed of more than 400 islands, including the Faroe Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean between the United Kingdom... (read more)

Navigate Hydrographic – the Nautical SmartChart

What is the core role of a hydrographer? To map the seafloor? Provide a precise position on the water? Some may believe it is to play with lots of expensive toys on boats, while colleagues are stuck in the office. While all those answers may be correct, I am asking about the core role of a hydrographer. I would suggest that it is collecting data to provide information that companies, clients and consultants rely on to make educated and accurate decisions. This is where our value as a professional service is demonstrated. However, here is another question - how do we present that information and, more to the point, could it be better? Jamie McMichael-Phillips Appointed Director of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project

Jamie McMichael-Phillips, the new director of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, has now taken up his position in leading one of the most challenging projects of the next decade, the mapping of the entire ocean floor by the year 2030. The announcement of his appointment was made at a conference held at the Royal Society in London, in October. Entitled ‘From Vision to Action’, the meeting, which brought together some of the world’s leading scientists and maritime organizations, was convened to mark the progress made in the two years since Seabed 2030 was launched, and to look ahead to...
