European Precise Positioning

Ground-based Regional GNSS Augmentation
Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS, GLONASS and, soon, Galileo are used for many positioning and navigation applications. But existing GNSS accuracy and reliability do not satisfy all clients. Ground-based augmentation systems provide GNSS observation data and real-time corrections for high-precision positioning and navigation. EUPOS is an initiative to build and run such systems with uniform standards and full-scale accuracy in fifteen Central and Eastern European countries. The European Position Determination System (EUPOS) is both an international initiative and a project to establish a uniform Differential GNSS basis infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Uniform ground-based multifunctional DGNSS... (read more)

Which Satellite Positioning Systems

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA, UK) has published new guidance on the selection of satellite positioning systems, warning that in recent years lower priority has been given to system selection than is wise. This is particularly the case when choosing a dynamic positioning (DP). The guide explains that the use of inappropriate systems has led to delays in project execution, vessel downtime and, in some circumstances, damage to assets. In the introduction to ‘Guidance on the Selection of Satellite Positioning Systems for Offshore Applications' (IMCA S 018) the association explains that the costs incurred during any of these incidents... High Precision Positioning

Extension of the Condamine Port in Monaco
The port of Monaco is undergoing an extensive construction process that will help double the port's capacity and protect it from heavy eastern swells and dangerous Mediterranean storms. The new port will include two unusual pontoon-type breakwaters as well as an additional hectare of land reclaimed from the sea. The project, costing more than 243 million euro, was initiated in June 1999 and is today slightly ahead of schedule. The existing port was built at the beginning of the century. At that time the water was too deep to allow, using building techniques of the day, construction of a jetty... (read more)
