Handheld Sensing System for Field Applications

Valuable real-time data can now be collected in a variety of settings with the Jaz, a handheld, field-portable analytical instrument from Ocean Optics that combines the power of optical sensing with onboard computing power. The level of flexibility Jaz provides will change analysis in custom applications ranging from crop management and environmental analysis to UV radiation and ozone monitoring.   Because of its size and versatility, Jaz is a convenient analytical tool for applications across various industries and disciplines. The spectral data collected and analyzed by Jaz can help marine biologists and hatcheries measure upwelling/downwellling, and supply fluorescence readings to... (read more)

Silicon Sensing Supports 'Mayflower' Autonomous Ship Project

To mark the 400th anniversary of the 'Mayflower' setting sail to America with 102 intrepid early settlers on board, a team has a plan to design and build a fully autonomous ship to make the same Atlantic crossing, completely unmanned, in 2020. The team is led by US-owned but UK-based (Plymouth) firm MSubs and includes Plymouth University and ProMare (a charitable research foundation). Silicon Sensing is to provide a package of support to help turn the MAS400 concept into reality. During the voyage, the Mayflower Autonomous Ship – MAS400 – will conduct a series of scientific experiments before arriving at... (read more)

Seaview Sensing to Install at Wave Hub

Seaview Sensing are to supply their metocean data software to the University of Plymouth and PRIMaRE (Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy) for use in the new Wave Hub project in the South West of England. The software will be used to provide waves, in particular full directional spectra data, and surface currents across a field in real-time.     Wave Hub will create the world's largest test site for wave energy technology by building a grid-connected socket on the seabed, 10 miles off the coast, to which wave power devices can be connected and their performance evaluated.  ... Remote Control of Underwater Engine Pod

WFS Defense and WFS Technologies have completed delivery of handheld wireless remote control systems to WaveJet Technologies. This California (USA)-based company has recently introduced a series of Personal Water Propulsion (PWP) Surfboards, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) and Water Rescue Boards. Powered by the patented WaveJet PWP pod, a miniaturised jet drive technology that may have applications for very-shallow water surveying.     The boards make 8 to 10 knots on still water, which is 3 to 5 times faster than paddling. The WaveJet PWP pod is designed for use in an open variety of boards and small watercraft from kayaks... (read more)
