CHA Award 2008

The Canadian Hydrographic Association was created by a number of senior people in the Canadian Hydrographic Service in 1966/1967 in answer to a requirement for hydrographic training and professional status within the service. The CHA has been a successful professional service from that time till present.   In 1992 a student award of CAD2000 was created to honour and assist a student in a Canadian University or Technical College who was enrolled in a related discipline as Canada has no dedicated hydrographic school. The award has been awarded each year since 1992. The 2008 award winner (15th) is Jason Workman,... (read more)

Eye4Software Releases Hydrographic Survey Software Package

Eye4Software, The Netherlands, has announced that the latest version of its hydrographic survey package, Hydromagic version 5.2, has been released to the public. The main purpose of this software is to map the bottom of a river, reservoir or ocean in 3D, by using a (D)GPS or RTK positioning system combined with an echosounder or fishfinder. Once data acquisition has been completed, the sounding can, if needed, be filtered and corrected using the built-in sounding editor. The corrected sounding can be used to generate a number of final products, like a digital terrain model or DTM, volume calculation, cross sections,... (read more)

Georeferencing and Time Tagging

Cadden has launched a device that synchronises data from different sensors in UTC (Universal Time Clock) time and space. It integrates high-precision GPS positioning, data acquisition and measurement synchronisation functions in a single device. Its communication ports allow for logging and time tagging many types of data with millisecond accuracy. Depending on the measurement programme to be carried out, the system can be connected to one or more external sensors such as a motion or attitude sensor, a gyrocompass, an inclinometer, an odometer, etc. The device is lightweight (1.2 kg) and compact (18 x 10 x 4.5 cm) enough to... Ageotec Delivers Perseo GTV

Ageotec, Italy, has delivered to Cadden (France) its first Perseo GTV. The Perseo GTV fills a gap in deep-sea survey and intervention ROV operations, being an alternative to existing higher-class vehicles whenever cost-effective solutions are required in terms of shipping, handling and vessel support. It can include payloads like multi-beam echosounders and cutters or manipulators. Main standard vehicle's specifications are: 1,500m depth rating, 200kg weight, 1.5m length x 0.9m width x 0.8m height, adjustable payload from 18 to 40kg, three real-time high-resolution video channels and 8 serial data lines on single-mode fibre optic umbilical. Due to a modular design, all... (read more)

Nuclear Underwater Laser Scanner

Newton Labs has developed and deployed a laser scanning product specifically designed to operate underwater, in-vessel, within either PWR or BWR reactors. The device, the NM200UW Nuclear Underwater Laser Scanner, designed in partnership with a major US nuclear utility, produces a point-cloud output so detailed that when utilised with industry-standard three-dimensional software a full measurable CAD model can be generated.     “This is a very exciting new product for the nuclear industry.” stated John W. Bramblet, president and CEO of Newton. “The need has existed for some time to be able to produce precise measurements and dimensions in-vessel. The... (read more)

Nova Scotia Announces Tidal Energy Facility Partners

Nova Scotia is one step closer to building North America's first in-stream tidal technology centre to host some of the world's leading devices to harness energy from the world's highest tides. Three candidates, representing technologies from Canada, U.S.A. and Ireland, have cleared the first hurdle in their bid to demonstrate tidal devices in the Bay of Fundy and the province has given Minas Basin Pulp and Power conditional approval to build the host facility.   The facility will be funded by a CAD4.7 million (USD4.6 million) grant from the province's Ecotrust for Clean Air and Climate Change program, a CAD3...
