2nd International Hydrography Summer Camp 2008

The 2nd International Hydrography Summer Camp 2008 is addressed to all interested students of Geomatics/Geodesy/Geoinformation and related disciplines, who want to know more about Hydrography. The HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) is offering a survey launch for the English spoken study program M.Sc. Hydrography (FIG/IHO/ICA Category A -Academic-). For foreign students (e.g. from Spain) the project will be held in English.

Hydrography uses real time multi sensor systems like GNSS, INS, sonar, and magnetometer for precise positioning and feature detection under water: forms and objects which cannot be seen. Several millions of points are determined each day which must be processed, cleaned, and visualized in 3-D and near real time. The demand for jobs is still increasing. Only a few universities worldwide can offer a CAT A program.

The project: Around 800 AD Hedeby was the leading market place of the Danish Vikings. German archaeologists in Schleswig reconstruct the rest of the old town. Still some relicts are located inside the river Schlei. A wooden construction, probably a shelter against Slavonic ships, was found several years ago by Hydrography students. Other objects like ship and airplane wrecks may found and measured. Archaeologists will accompany the project.

The river Schlei is located in a beautiful area between Kiel and Flensburg in the northern part of Germany. A Danish rowing club in Missunde offers inexpensive possibilities to sleep in beds and sleeping bags in a big room with kitchen and sanitaries (at a price of round about 6 Euro per person/night). Interested may sleep in tents. Bed and breakfast is offered closely to the rowing club. Accomodation costs must be paid by each student. The participation in the project itself is free of costs.

The number of participants is limited to 15 students at a time because of logistic conditions. Unfortunately we have to select participants if the number of applicants is greater than 15. The Summer Camp will be held from 18 to 30 August 2008. For more information see the leaflet below.
