Aquadyne Helps Provide Hydrocarbon Leak Detection Solution

A solution to the problem of detecting subsea gas leaks has been developed by Aquadyne AS and Poseidon Group AS, both of Norway and Reson AS of Denmark. Aquadyne has combined its expertise in underwater positioning and imagery with the subsea engineering and project skills provided by the Poseidon Group.
The outcome is an adaptation of the Reson Seabat 8128 focused forward looking multibeam sonar that enables users to see hydrocarbons escaping from seabed installations and pipelines in zero visibility. It is being presented during the ONS exhibition in a programme of demonstrations in Stavanger harbour aboard the Poseidon vessel m/s Sjøtroll.
The high resolution imagery provided by the gas detection system is claimed to be comparable to a clear black and white photograph. The very rapid update rate of the sonar image makes it possible for the system to capture images of escaping hydrocarbons that can be viewed in real time on a surface display. The high definition of the sonar images also makes the system ideal for inspecting or planning work on seabed installations regardless of the clarity of the water.
