Automation: an Oceanology Take Home Message

"Automation", is it the take home message for Oceanology 2008? It could be. The message has been delivered to us time and time again. From the implementation of S-57 and Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) to AUVs, UUVs, and USVs, we see our industry being driven more and more towards getting more done with less.

One company taking "automation" to the next level is OI new-comer ODIM. ODIM is well known for providing safe and cost effective automated handling systems to the seismic industry and is now bringing this deep knowledge to hydrography and oceanography.

Delivering such products as the Cable Traction Control Unit (CTCU) system for handling fibre robe-based deepwater systems, and the automatic bulk-hose connection system (ABCS), ODIM integrates innovation with quality and service.

In and maintaining a strategy of growth and innovation, ODIM acquired Brooke Ocean Technology in 2006 and now brings the ODIM MVP (Moving Vessel Profiler) and the Free Fall Cone Penetrometer (FFCPT) to its arsenal of products.  The MVP facilitates automated water column CTD and/or SV&P as well as in-situ sediment classification for naval, oceanographic and seismic surveying projects while keeping the survey vessel doing what it is supposed to do; collect data and make money.
