Chilean Navy Orders Automated Voluntary Observing System

AXYS Technologies, an environmental monitoring company located in Sidney, B.C., Canada, is providing the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) of the Chilean Navy an Automated Voluntary Observing System (AVOS).
The Voluntary Observing Ships' program (VOS) recruits ocean-going ships to record and transmit weather data. VOS reports originally were manually generated with observation bias and input error. In conjunction with Environment Canada, AXYS has developed AVOS to automate VOS weather reports.
The AVOS system will be installed on R/V AGOR 60 Vidal Gormaz (former US Navy AGOR 10 Thomas Washington) in March 2005.
