Commercial Training Initiative – Bulletin to Industry

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), in partnership with the University Of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Higher Learning (USM), announce for 2004 the inauguration of a series of United States-wide seminars in Hydrographic Science. These 3-day courses are aimed at the maritime industry as a whole and not just at the professional surveying spectrum, although the material will also provide a useful refresher for the professional hydrographer, bathymetrist or oceanographer. Those involved in maritime business, or whose profession necessitates a basic understanding of the marine or even the freshwater environment for either contractual or operational safety purposes, are particularly encouraged to attend.
Course seminar topics have been selected to best fit the industrial demography of a certain location, though additional courses, depending on demand, can be organized.
Actual course content will be distributed to all parties expressing an interest in participating in these seminars.
A minimum of 10 students is required to ensure the successful staging of the seminars, and a maximum of 20 students per course is envisioned.
The following courses are provided:

• Intro to hydro for non-surveyors: A fundamental-level introduction to the science and techniques of modern hydrography
  
• Intro to hydro for surveyors: designed for the already-trained GIS user, this seminar introduces the various aspects of surveying over or on water to a largely terrestrial-based survey audience
  
• Hydro survey tools of the trade: this seminar will look at the suite of equipment and system types in common usage today: their advantages and disadvantages; and the requirement to standardise data collection to enable successful importing of supportive datasets within GIS frameworks
  
• Hydrography and the military user: this specialised seminar is designed for the military end-user and DoD data-supplier alike
  
• Hydrographic surveys, products and specifications: the seminar seeks to inform the non-surveying prime contractor about how the various products from a hydrographic survey can be prioritised with the surveyor prior to mobilisation and utilised by the customer for a number of different applications
  
• Coastlines and water levels for resource managers and engineers (to include tides, water levels and geodetic control): this seminar will seek to assist those charged with safeguarding the coast in understanding the dynamics of our nearshore environment, with particular emphasis on tides and water levels
