GAPS from Ixsea Oceano
Ixsea Oceano has introduced its new GAPS Global Acoustic Positioning System. The launch took place at Oceanology International Americas in New Orleans. GAPS is an all-in-one, compact, portable solution for underwater and surface navigation. Ixsea Oceano has merged high-end underwater acoustics and inertial technologies to design a plug & play, user-friendly USBL. GAPS integrates GPS, USBL and an Inertial Navigation System in a single package. There is no mechanical alignment, calibration or control software needed. A couple of minutes after installation, GAPS is fully operational.
Scientists at Ixsea Oceano have developed a specific Kalman filter to optimise the merging of high-end inertial and acoustic technologies. The 3-D acoustic array enables a 200 degree aperture. Subsea positioning is done with more than 3,000m slant range, 0.2 per cent accuracy and no delay continuous positioning and adjustable output rate. At the same time, an accurate INS provides attitude and position of the surface vessel. Surface and sub-sea positions continue to be given in cases of GPS outage.
The portable USBL system GAPS, is compact - the antenna fits in a 12’ gate valve - and may be deployed on ships, small boats, ROVs, buoys, etc.
