Jim Gardner Awarded Shephard Medal

James Gardner, research professor at the US Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center, has received the Shepard Medal for excellence in marine geology from the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). He will be presented with the medal at the SEPM's annual meeting in April 2012.

Larry Mayer, director of CCOM and co-director of the JHC, expresses that this is a great honour for Jim, CCOM and UNH. "It is a very prestigious medal and well-deserved."

A world-renowned marine geologist, Gardner leads CCOM/JHC's mapping efforts in support of US claims to an extended continental shelf under the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention. He has participated in mapping cruises in the Atlantic, eastern and western Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of Alaska and Beaufort Sea and published more than 200 scientific papers. Before joining UNH in 2003, he led the US Geological Survey's Pacific Mapping Group.
