Mapping the oceans: have your say with the Seabed 2030 Project survey

The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project is seeking support for its collaborative initiative to map the world’s oceans by 2030 and compile all bathymetric data into the freely available GEBCO Ocean Map. The project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of oceanic processes and resources and to enable the sustainable management of oceans and marine hazards.

To achieve this vision, the Seabed 2030 Project is conducting a second online survey to identify global cumulative needs and priorities, and to inform the development of a benefits analysis and prioritization modelling for seabed mapping. The survey seeks views from the wider global community of national government agencies involved in seabed mapping data acquisition, production and use.

The drive to map uncharted seabeds

By contributing bathymetric data to the Seabed 2030 Project, organizations can be part of a global collaboration that provides a unique opportunity to create a new foundation for strengthening our understanding and management of the world’s oceans and coasts for the benefit of humanity.

In 2021–2022, the Seabed 2030 Project launched its first online survey, which received 796 detailed responses across 90 countries. The survey collected views from across all interested sectors to better understand why stakeholders feel it is important to map the seabed, to estimate the environmental, social and economic value of seabed mapping, and to identify the most urgent priorities for seabed mapping in uncharted waters.

The Seabed 2030 Project recognizes that the key to realizing its vision is building global coordination between government, the public, academia and industry. Therefore, it is requesting support and participation in this revolutionary global initiative to inspire the complete mapping of the world’s oceans by 2030. The survey will close on Friday 31 March 2023.To access the survey, please click here.
