McMurdo MT-1 AIS Awarded United States (FCC) Type Approval

The MT-1 Automatic Identification System (AIS) from McMurdo has gained full type approval in the US, having received its Grant of Authorisation certificate from the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) of Washington. This marks the completion of the final stage of the approval process and now means that the MT-1 is approved as being suitable for the AIS carriage requirements of vessels sailing in US waters.
The MT-1 is an AIS transponder with touch-screen Minimum Keyboard and Display (MKD), and is designed to transmit the ship’s data to other vessels in the vicinity as well as shore-based vessel tracking systems. It is already fully approved for use in Europe, having recently received its EC Quality System certification and EU MED Ship Wheel Approval. This enables the MT-1 AIS to be fitted to vessels whose flag state are MED compliant. AIS is mandated to be fitted to all SOLAS vessels before December 31st 2004.
