ODI Captures Governor’s New Product Award for 2004

The Governor’s New Product Award Program saluted Ocean Design, Inc., (ODI for the design and development of their I-CONN product. The award, administered by the Florida Professional Engineers in Industry, a practice section of the Florida Engineering Society (FES), is presented on the basis of excellence in design and economic impact in the state of Florida.
The Governor’s New Product Award, presented to ODI for their I-CONN, is a 2-circuit underwater-mateable fibre-optic connector, which allows the reliable connection of optical fibres in harsh environments, including underwater at great ocean depths. Historically, such connectors have been large, complicated and expensive. This connector allows the connection of 1 or 2 optical fibres in a small package (less than 2” diameter), using a novel and simple design. The product was first patented in October 1999. After more than a year of development, a final prototype was completed in early 2001. First sales were made in July 2001 to an oil and gas customer and, later in May 2002, to an underwater telecommunications customer.
