Offshore survey 2007 – Technical Conference day 2

The keynote speech on Tuesday 27 March 2007 by John Westwood made clear the great increase in activity in the O&G – business in the coming years. The technology (and the progress in technology) is there to do the job (depending how much money you want to spend), but people trained and experienced to make it happen are essential. Today’s first presentation by David Whitecombe, Chief Surveyor at Shell, continued on this trail.

Entitled: “Recruit, Train, Retain”, he explored the subject under the heading “working together to ensure people and skills availability for the future”.

He suggested solutions like:

  • resurrect an Industry Working Group to influence and steer, independent and without vested interest;
  • improvement of attraction and retention (starting at schools etc.);
  • creation of a cohesive framework of competences, accreditation, education and training;
  • explore the establishment or adaptation of an existing training centre in offshore competences supported by OPITO.

Suggestions (and assistance) are welcomed at [email protected].

It goes without saying that Hydro International will support initiatives by giving exposure in our magazine, like we have done and the past (see e.g. our January and February 2007 issues or use the search archives function.
