OSIL Supplies Equipment for Synchronised Current Studies
OSIL will supply a package of high-tech instruments to Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL) for the fine measurement of turbulence and currents in coastal and in-shore waters.
POL was looking for a highly accurate system that could provide synchronised readings of current velocity, temperature and salinity. Three 5MHz ADV Hydra current meters were ordered for small-scale current measurement. Each Hydra has a great advantage in introducing little or no turbulence around the sampling heads due to their small size and the measuring cell being positioned 18cm away from the instrument, thus enabling an even higher level of accuracy.
POL also selected an AML Micro CTD system on a cable comprising of 3 Micro CTDs and a separate logger/battery pack. This was synchronised to work with the Hydras so that POL could gather co-ordinated data for a greater understanding of turbulence processes in coastal waters.
The funds to purchase these instruments were provided by the Bottom Turbulence Kit NERC-Capital equipment competition NE/C513477/1.
