RAN Surveyor Posthumously Honoured

On Wednesday 16th June 2009, the Royal Australian Navy's LCDR Peter Johnson was posthumously honored for his professional achievements in LiDAR hydrography at the Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Centre for Expertise (JALBTCE) 10th Annual Airborne Coastal Mapping and Charting Workshop, Portland (OR, USA).

LCDR Johnson was the recipient of the inaugural 532 Award, given to those who have significantly contributed to the advancement of the technology and use of LiDAR bathymetry and airborne coastal mapping and charting.

LCDR Johnson's memory was also honoured by the introduction of a new JALBTCE annual award established in perpetuity, the LCDR Peter Johnson Best Practices Award.

Recipients of the LCDR Peter Johnson Best Practices Award must have accomplished a complicated and demanding project or field operation within the previous two years.  The joint winners this year were Scott Ramsay of LADS Corporation for project surveying in Alaska and Florida; and Don Venture and his FUGRO survey team for survey work completed for the Royal Australian Navy.

LCDR Peter Johnson passed away on 22th April 2007, whilst still in active service.
