Real-time Weather Data for Homecoming of Hawaii’s Legendary Canoe - 15/06/2017
Liquid Robotics’ Wave Gliders are participating in the historic homecoming and celebration for the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s 'Hōkūleʻa' canoe after its three-year 'Mālama Honua' voyage covering 40,000 nautical miles. On the final miles of this historic journey, Wave Gliders will provide real-time weather, environmental and navigation data for the 'Hōkūleʻa' and her sister canoes as they sail into Oʻahu, Hawaii. This data will complement the traditional art and science of Polynesian wayfinding with modern technology for enhanced knowledge and safety.
Hōkūleʻa’s homecoming celebration includes a three-day Mālama Honua Fair & Summit and Hōkūleʻa’s Education outreach. Liquid Robotics is honoured to speak on the topic of 'Community-based natural resource management integrating TEK with green modern technology' and participate in community outreach to foster Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) youth education.
With origins on the Hawaii Island and the Company’s Engineering & Test Facility in Kawaihae Harbor, these activities complement a history of community partnership and underscore the Company’s dedication and continued support to the local Hawaiian communities, government and academia. Utilising the wave and solar-powered Wave Glider in programmes like Aloha ʻĀina ('Love of the Land') enables these organisations to gain the scientific data needed to safeguard their coastlines, environment and ensure sustainability for future generations.
