River Ganges Navigation Capacity Improvement Study

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is investigating measures to augment the navigational capacity of the River Ganges, under the Jal Vikas Marg project. HR Wallingford (UK), alongside project partners Howe Engineering Projects (India) and PMC Project (India), will undertake a package of river modelling, geomorphology, dredging, engineering and navigation feasibility studies.

The River Ganges (or River Ganga) already carries shipping and is recognised as having the potential to be a major inland waterway of over 1,500km in length.

Dr Mike Dearnaley, HR Wallingford’s chief technical director, said there can be few projects as prestigious for the company as supporting the IWAI with this investigation on one of the world’s greatest rivers. He is looking forward to working with IWAI and partners to develop a set of solutions that are deliverable and work with the natural river system.
