Russians Choose Sips 2
The Russian survey organisation SMNG (SEVMORNEFTEGEOFIZIKA) has taken delivery of a Seismic Integrated Positioning System (SIPS 2) from Sonardyne International for use aboard the Akedemik Nemchinov survey vessel. SMNG is part of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, which is expanding its seismic survey capabilities to include 3D operations. As part of this programme, the Akedemik Nemchinov is being upgraded from a single streamer to a four-streamer vessel in preparation for work in the Barents Sea and elsewhere in the region. The SIPS 2 system will be used to provide continuous, real-time acoustic positioning along the length of each streamer to ensure the accuracy of the seismic data that is collected. The SMNG decision to purchase SIPS 2 is also said to have been influenced by a Sonardyne commitment to supporting customers in the region, considered an important emerging market. This is reflected in the recent appointment of a Moscow-based agency to represent the company’s interests in Russia.
