Sailing Vessel Equipped With Modern Transas Software

Transas Europe delivered a dual Navi-Sailor 3100 ECDIS-System and an AIS-Transponder on board the German Navy Sail Training Ship Gorch Fock. The installation took place under the umbrella of the Fleetfit contract, awarded in 2005 to equip almost 90 seagoing German Navy vessels in 24 classes with ECDIS and AIS. The Gorch Fock is a tall ship with 2,000 square metres of sail, and is used to train officer and petty officer cadets in traditional seamanship skills. Everything on board works through muscle power and teamwork only. There are no electric winches or hydraulic aids to assist the handling of the ship. Safe navigation can be conducted even in remote places with the new navigation suite, where the dual ECDIS, Radar and AIS are fully integrated. Having the AIS now on-board, other vessels can identify this beautiful ship as 'under sail' and keep clear on the seven seas. The biggest challenges during installation were to find a suitable place for the system in the small wheelhouse, and to locate the new AIS-antennas in an area not covered by the mighty sails and masts.
