SWATHplus Measures Melting Icebergs
The Aberystwyth University's Geography and Earth Sciences Department, UK, investigates the melt rate of icebergs in the Arctic. The researchers are using a SEA SWATHplus 486 kHz system on a remote-controlled vessel and already have acquired amazing data from the front of a few of the big calving glaciers, which will be the basis of a new approach to mapping detail change and dynamics over these systems.
Dr Alan Hubbart elaborates that the data are fantastic and very exciting when combined with long range (3 km) terrestrial laser scanning.
Their endeavours are being filmed by the BBC as part of a new series called The Frozen Planet, to be screened in 2011.
SEA (UK) recently came to the rescue of when key SWATHplus sonar equipment was stolen from their yacht. In double-quick time SEA provided an off-the-shelf system in readiness for their trip to Greenland.
