USCG Type Approval for UAIS

The MT-1 Universal Automatic Identification System (UAIS) from McMurdo has received product approval from the United States Coast Guard (USCG). The MT-1 is a UAIS transponder with a touch-screen LCD display and is designed to transmit ship’s data to other vessels in the vicinity as well as shore-based vessel tracking systems. The MT-1 has been approved as being suitable for the requirements of vessels sailing in US waters and can now go before the Federal Communication Commission of Washington (FCC) to be issued with a Grant of Authorisation certificate.
The MT-1 is already fully approved for use in Europe, having recently received its EC Quality System certification and EU MED Ship Wheel Approval. This enables the MT-1 UAIS to be fitted to vessels whose flag state are MED-compliant. UAIS must by mandate be fitted to all SOLAS vessels before 31st December 2004.
Designed to meet IMO Class A requirements for UAIS, the MT-1 provides a tracking, positioning, and collision avoidance system. The touch screen LCD display provides intuitive, user-friendly use, enabling fast and easy access and visual understanding of the data provided by the MT-1 UAIS. Its design means it is suitable for tabletop, bulkhead or flush panel fitting and it transmits static and voyage-related data every six minutes, while dynamic information is transmitted every two seconds to three minutes, depending on the ship’s navigational status and speed.
