World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm in Use
Vattenfall has completed the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm, off the south east coast of England, currently the largest offshore wind farm in the world. The official launch takes place today. Among others, Vattenfall's President and CEO, Øystein Løseth and UK Secretary of State, Chris Huhne, are to attend. With its one hundred turbines located in water depths of 20-25m and covering an area of 35sq km, the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm has a combined energy capacity corresponding to the annual electricity needs of over 200,000 households.
The nearest turbine will be located approx 12km north east of Foreness Point and each turbine is 115m tall at its highest point, with a minimum clearance above sea level of 22m. The distance between turbines is approximately 500m along rows and 800m between rows. The connection of Thanet's 300MW increases UK offshore wind capacity by more than 30%.
The Thanet Offshore Wind Farm is a significant investment in renewable wind energy for Vattenfall. The electricity generated at Thanet substantially increases the generation of "green electricity" in the UK.
