Sedimentation Estimation from ADCP Measurements

Monitoring sediment transport in a small harbour
Many harbours in tide-dominated areas silt up as a consequence of asymmetric tides. To understand the process of harbour sedimentation at tidal rivers, it is important to know the amount of transport of suspended sediment. In a small and shallow harbour along a tidal river, simultaneous ADC, OBS, CTD and water sample measurements are done for observations of suspended sediment transport. ADCP backscatter is converted to suspended sediment concentration by means of calibration with OBS, CTD and water sample data. Sediment fluxes are calculated by multiplication of SSC by ADCP discharge data for a total of more than three hundred... (read more)

10,000th Workhorse ADCP Delivered

Teledyne RD Instruments has recently reached two milestones. First, in 2007, the company celebrated its 25th year of business. Then, in January 2008, Teledyne RDI celebrated another significant milestone when Workhorse ADCP number 10,000 rolled off the company's assembly line. The first Workhorse ADCP product was developed in 1992, ten years after the company's inception.   Since it's inception in 1982 through Fran Rowe and Kent Deines' development of the industry's first underwater Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), the company has gone on to produce a wide array of acoustic Doppler products for measuring water in motion and motion in... ADCP Product Unveiling at OB

Teledyne RD Instruments is to unveil its new next-generation line of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling (ADCP) products at Ocean Business 2011. After fifteen years of success, the Workhorse ADCP products will be complimented by the Sentinel V ADCP, the first in a series of V ADCP products based on a new technology platform. Also on display on booth S1 will be the new long range PAVS150 Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) and Citadel CTD products.   To learn more about all three of these technologies, a Teledyne Marine Product Innovation Preview is scheduled on Monday, 4th April in room 104/13 at... Online, Interactive ADCP/DVL Instruction

Utilising WebEx technology, RD Instruments has implemented a new and innovative e-learning program designed to provide its customers with ongoing internet-based ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) and DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) training. All courses are fully interactive and include a visual presentation, accompanied by real time communication between RDI’s instructors and the course attendees. Designated as RDI University, this program allows busy ADCP and DVL users to attend these free courses via the internet from the comfort of their own office. Each course is led by a highly qualified trainer from the RDI staff, with 40 minutes dedicated to course... (read more)

Automating Edge Discharge Calculation in ADCP Software

A key new feature in the discharge measurement software ViSea DAS allows the user to add a bottom profile. By doing so, side extrapolation from the start and end points of the survey track to the shore is calculated automatically using dGPS positioning. This removes the error inherent in estimating the track-to-shore distance for each individual track, which is the current method used in comparable software packages. Read on for details of research that validates this new approach. By Andrea Spitzner and Shauna Ní Fhlaithearta, data analysts, Aqua Vision BV, the Netherlands Discharge measurements are important for the characterisation of... (read more)

Horizontal ADCP Real-time Suspended Sediment Monitoring

PDT-H is Aqua Vision’s toolbox for the existing horizontal ADCP software suite, ViSea-H DAS. This toolbox lets the user quantify sediment concentrations and fluxes from horizontal ADCP data. PDT-H calculates suspended sediment fluxes by extrapolating the vertical concentration profile. The toolbox also lets the user post-process and optimise self-contained horizontal ADCP data with e.g. grain size distribution, calibration coefficients, etc. The development and testing of PDT-H has been carried out in close cooperation with the Port of Hamburg. CEO, Peter Meijer, said that developing PDT-H was the logical next step for the ViSea-H DAS software suite. He added that Aqua... (read more)

ADCP Used in Berth Management Systems

One of Strainstall UK Limited's primary marine safety systems is their Berth Management System, which is used chiefly for the docking of VLCCs (oil tankers) and LNG (liquid natural gas) carriers. The Berth Management System provides assistance to vessels on their approach to the berth and during mooring by monitoring the conditions of the sea and surrounding area to ensure the complete safety of the vessel.   The system undertakes continuous surveillance of the mooring and vessel related parameters, such as speed and position of the vessel on approach, weather conditions and oceanographic parameters.   A system such as Strainstall's... Triaxys Wave Buoy and RD Instruments ADCP

Comparison of Directional Wave Parameters
Since July 2004 the author has been routinely measuring waves 10km offshore Savannah, Georgia, at a site with mean water depth of 13m, using a Triaxys wave buoy (see This report summarises a comparison of directional wave parameters from the buoy and 1,200kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) equipped with pressure transducer and waves firmware. The ADCP was deployed beside the wave buoy, resulting in 72 days of comparative simultaneous hourly measurements of directional wave-energy spectra from the two systems. The goal of this report is to provide some results for objective comparison of the two instrument... (read more)

Order for Three RiverRay ADCP Systems

Aqua Vision, the Netherlands, will supply the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment of the Netherlands with three RiverRay ADCP systems. The order includes support and maintenance by Aqua Vision BV for a period of five years. The Ministry will deploy RiverRay ADCPs for current direction, velocity and discharge measurements in rivers. The RiverRay system will be delivered with Aqua Vision’s ViSea Data Acquisition Software. ViSea DAS allows users to acquire data from multiple sensors and apply post-acquisition corrections to ADCP data. RiverRay ADCPs, manufactured by Teledyne RD Instruments, are characterised by their versatility and ease of use. Using adaptive... (read more)

ADCP Buoy and Float Manufacturing Relaunched

DeepWater Buoyancy, USA, has relaunched the oceanography/marine measurements line of syntactic foam ADCP buoys, StableMoor floats and trawl resistant bottom mounts (TRBMs) formerly manufactured by Flotation Technologies (Flotec). When Flotation Technologies’ parent company chose to discontinue the manufacture of this line of oceanographic flotation, DeepWater Buoyancy stepped in to take it over, continuing to supply flotation products to the oceanographic community. This month, the company is shipping StableMoor buoys, ADCP buoys and a wide range of cable floats and custom parts. DeepWater Buoyancy opened its doors on 1 January 2014 after securing the designs and manufacturing rights to the Flotation... (read more)
