Web Access to NOAA Hydro Survey Plans

The NOAA Coast Survey is posting its three-year survey plans and making them publicly available at the Planned NOAA Hydrographic Survey Areas (2015-2017) in ArcGIS Online. In addition to seeing the outlines of planned survey areas for the next three years, users can obtain additional metadata (project name, calendar year, and area in square nautical miles) for each survey by clicking on the outlines. With over 3.4 million square nautical miles of U.S. waters to chart, NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey is constantly evaluating long-term hydrographic survey priorities. The Hydrographic Survey Division is Coast Survey’s primary data acquisition arm. They... (read more)

Seabed Digital Elevation Model to Accompany Datasets

Independent marine data management and publishing specialist OceanWise Ltd (UK) has established off-the-shelf marine mapping datasets including Raster Charts and the vector dataset Marine Themes. To accompany the datasets, OceanWise has created Marine Themes DEM, a seabed digital elevation model (DEM) at 1 and 6 arc seconds utilising single and multi-beam hydrographic survey data from the UK Hydrographic Office and other agencies. Offering exceptional value, OceanWise mapping and data management products are being used widely across central and local Government, NGOs and the commercial sector. To accompany the above datasets, OceanWise has created Marine Themes DEM, a seabed digital elevation... (read more)

McDonald Bradley to use ESRI Toolset to Develop New Nautical Charting System

McDonald Bradley has recently won an US$11.2 million prime contract with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) to develop the Nautical Charting System II – an enterprise solution for managing chart data. The Company has selected ESRI as a subcontractor on the project. In addition, the team will utilize a software toolset from ESRI as part of the solution. The NOAA project for the Office of Coast Survey, Marine Chart Division will utilise the ESRI Production Line Tool Set for ArcGIS-Nautical Solution. Summer Institute for GIS Educators

ESRI is hosting the 2009 ESRI T3G Institute (Teachers Teaching Teachers GIS), from 14 to 19 June 2009, at its company headquarters in Redlands (CA, USA). Teachers of grades 5-12, university instructors, and youth and community group leaders will work with ArcGIS software and data to improve their geographic information system (GIS) knowledge and technical skills. Ultimately, attendees will apply what they learn in their own classrooms or programs and show others in their field how to teach using GIS concepts.     The 2009 institute will include hands-on exercises; best practices discussions; and presentations about the latest geospatial trends... Danish Geodata Agency Partners with Esri to Chart the Waters of Denmark and Greenland

Esri, a location intelligence company, has announced that it has partnered with the Danish Geodata Agency (GST) to implement a modern workflow to more efficiently create and maintain nautical charts of Danish and Greenlandic waters. Esri will assist with the installation of, and training for, the new enterprise production system. Because maritime traffic is increasing significantly and new routes are opening due to melting ice, it is crucial to have accurate charts in support of safe navigation and environmental protection. GST turned to Esri for a solution when the organization needed to convert the production of navigational charts from a... (read more)

Maritime Professionals Find Opportunities at Esri User Conference

There are vast applications for geographic information system (GIS) technology. Nowhere was this more apparent than the floors of the San Diego Convention Center, USA, during this year's annual Esri User Conference (Esri UC). The massive space was occupied by the many users, companies, government agencies and enthusiasts who benefit from Esri's ArcGIS platform. The showcase and networking event was not geared toward expert users only, however, and nor is Esri technology limited to land applications. The event had dozens of maritime-related activities and was not exclusive to 'experts'. There is a large group of users in the maritime field that consumes, rather than... (read more)

Israeli Navy Transforms to New GIS Technology

The Transformation to a 21st Century Organisation with New GIS Maritime Workflows
The Israeli Navy Hydrographic Branch (INHB) is transforming itself into a 21st-century organisation. Moving away from traditional methods of generating hydrographic products, INHB has adopted geographic information system (GIS) technology. This forms part of the evolution towards a full modern Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI). Speed of production, diversity of the products generated, and a closer working relationship with other departments have been among the key drivers of the transformation. Established in 1976, the INHB’s mission is to produce all hydrographic and cartographic requirements for the Israeli Navy. That includes surveying, generating paper charts, ENC and nautical publication production. Like... (read more)

GIS in Offshore Pipeline/Asset Inspection Surveys

Fugro Survey Limited undertake a wide variety of offshore pipeline/asset inspection surveys for energy companies throughout the world, using side-scan sonar and multi-beam echo sounder data to ascertain the condition of pipeline networks, umbilicals and other structures on the seabed. One of many very recent and significant developments, and the focus of this article, has been the use of GIS in data QC, analysis and delivery of data. This article focuses specifically on annual inspection surveys undertaken for NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maat-schappij BV) in the Dutch Sector of the Southern North Sea. The New Role of Hydrography in the 21st Century

Evolving from Charts to Geospatial Data
Traditionally, hydrographic data was used mainly for nautical charts. Hydrographic surveys are costly, and data should be used beyond navigation. Some have developed centralised hydrographic databases, but their only purpose is to produce charts. Hydrographic data should be used for other purposes too. Hydrographic data is the foundation for building a maritime data management system, in the framework of a Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure for broader use. Visionary organisations are already evolving their traditional roles and jumping onto the ‘Big Data’ ship and connecting to the World through web services. The use of Hydrographic data is evolving for good. When... (read more)
