1997-2007: A Decade of Developments in Hydrography

We all know what is the oldest profession in the world. The second oldest is probably that of land surveyor: Adam undoubtedly wanted to stake out the boundaries of paradise in order to know what was and was not his. Paradise, or the Garden of Eden, was to be found in the land of the Euphrates and Tigris, where these two rivers converge at the town of Qurna in the present Shatt al Arab. And apart from his topographical activities Adam must also have made some hydrographic observations, probably just using a stick cut from a local fruit tree! After... (read more)

Oceanology International to have Three Points of Focus

When Oi08 opens at the ExCeL centre in London’s Docklands on 11 March, the exhibition and its accompanying conference will focus on the three important issues that have begun to dominate thinking in ocean science and technology: climate change, meeting future energy demands, and ensuring environmental and civil security. These have become interconnected issues, with expertise now moving freely between each of these apparently specialised sectors.<P> With a 3-day conference accompanying this major exhibition, it is almost inevitable that public concerns about climate change will attract considerable interest. The role of the oceans in global warming is likely to take... (read more)

Oceanology International 2010 Preview (2)

This is the continuation of the Oceanology International Preview. For companies A - L, see part 1  MacArtney Underwater Technology Group MacArtney will be introducing their newest innovation in multiplexers - the NEXUS MK E electrical multiplexer, which is designed to the same high standards as the fibre optic multiplexer range with the telemetry part of the multiplexer adapted to non-fibre optic cables. Another highlight will be the demonstration of a working active heave compensation winch, the Cormac 3 Stainless Steel winch. It will demonstrate load stability during vessel movement on the sea. MacArtney will show their Focus ROTV, camera... (read more)

Hydrographic Surveying: Where Do We Stand

The Ever-increasing Accuracy of Mapping the Surface Waters
Hydrographic surveying is highly specific and requires a suite of advanced acquisition and positioning sensors attached to a mobile survey platform as well as sophisticated software to allow the correct combination of all the data. For those within the industry, the advances over the last decade may feel more like an evolution rather than a revolution. If we look back one, two or even three decades, we can see the enormous leap hydrographic surveying has taken. Where do we stand, and what can we expect for the near future? In this article, we will look at the present compared to... (read more)

Capturing Convection: Glider Validated Modelling

Can Underwater Gliders Be Used to Check Ocean Forecast Accuracy?
Recently, three unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) were deployed in the northwest Mediterranean Sea to monitor open-ocean convection via changes in the local density structure. Mixed-layer depth and thermocline response to buoyancy flux were extrapolated from in-situ profiles and used to infer the occurrence of deepwater formation events. The high-resolution data set acquired has been used to assess ocean forecast model performance in this area. The advantages of employing glider data sets in further validation schemes are discussed here. Forecast models are employed by the oceanographic agencies for meteorological and commercial shipping applications, as well as in naval sonar propagation studies,... (read more)
