DP Trials Programmes for DP Vessels Guidance

Guidance for developing and conducting annual DP trials programmes for DP vessels (IMCA M 190) has been published by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA, UK) to describe the development, conduct and management of annual dynamically positioned (DP) trials programmes for all types of vessels equipped with DP systems meeting the requirements of International Maritime Organization (IMO) equipment classes 1, 2 or 3.   The guidance is intended to assist vessel operators in the development of a suitable annual DP trials programme. This programme provides consistent  content for similar vessels, more effectively demonstrates the vessel's ability to maintain position following... (read more)

New Veripos DP Software

Verify-DP, a new compact software module for fast and effective position quality determination, has been introduced by Veripos for use in association with its global Differential GPS services. The module is specifically designed for Dynamic Positioning (DP) and navigation users operating in real-time who require readily available validation of data in a simplified format not usually possible with complex Quality Control software. Verify-DP redresses this requirement by providing a prominent fixed graphical display of essential position quality data for calculated DGPS solutions and associated corrections. It also generates alarms for all key positioning parameters as well as software function status... (read more)

DP Simulator at STC

Recently Mr Aart Korteland, (Chairman of the Royal Association of Dutch shipowners KVNR) officially launched the new Class 1 and 2 Dynamic Positioning Simulator at the Wilhelminakade branche of STC B.V..   This simulator is an addition to STC's already impressive set of simulators. The specific feature of this simulator is that is has two consoles of both Kongsberg and Imtech. Both the simulator and the instructors are certified by the Nautical Institute.   The combination of training on various facilities for DP (Class 1 and 2) means real training on the job, or in other words, on board a... Safe DP Operations

Safe operation of dynamically positioned (DP) vessels is of vital importance to the global offshore oil and gas industry. Ian Giddings, Technical Adviser at the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) recently outlined at the Marine Technology Society (MTS) Dynamic Positioning Conference, how fundamentally important the guidance, information notes, safety notes and incident reports gathered by IMCA are to the industry.   Ian Giddings' presentation in Houston to an international audience looked at the work already done in the area and at what is to be done in the future. This includes updating existing guidance and providing new guidance on simultaneous... (read more)

Gardline Charters DP Reel

Gardline Geosciences, UK, has signed a contract with Red7Marine for the long-term charter of the 91m, DP2 vessel DP Reel. The addition of the DP Reel increases Gardline’s geotechnical fleet to seven units, of which three are based in European waters. This vessel will undertake borehole, seabed sampling and cone penetrometer testing projects and is available for worldwide deployment. Following Gardline’s recent completion of a successful shallow geotechnical sampling and CPT campaign in the South Atlantic, DP Reel will now be equipped with a permanently installed drill rig, mounted over the vessel’s moon pool, in advance of the vessel’s next... DP Software Package

Veripos has introduced Verify DPx, a status monitoring and display software package specifically designed for dynamic positioning applications. The package operates in conjunction with Veripos LD3 integrated mobile units and is available as standard within a compact 15-inch touch screen panel PC. It can also be supplied to run on customers' own hardware.   The system provides quality control supported by high-resolution graphic displays via simplified touch screen controls. Screen displays in turn provide continuous QC information using Veripos' traffic light system which enables users to monitor positional and system performance status continuously. A key feature also is a 12-hour... (read more)

Offshore DP System

Agreements were signed this week between SeeByte and Equipment & Technical Services (ETS), making SeeByte's SeeTrack ROV Dynamic Positioning (DP) System available to ETS customers in the Americas on a rental basis. Following integration with the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) control system, either by retrofit or during ROV manufacture, SeeTrack automates the control process to provide full ROV DP.   It can be rented separately or together with ancillary sensors which are also offered by ETS. SeeTrack Offshore provides significant improvements over conventional DP systems, including: greater efficiency in manoeuvring, while ignoring the effects of currents; reduced risk of hitting... ROV DP Capabilities Demonstrated

A recent trials partnership between Sonardyne International, UK, and USA-headquartered Oceaneering International has resulted in the development of a Fly-By-Wire (FBW) system for ROV control in any water depth, allowing the vehicle to hold station indefinitely and navigate to real-world coordinates automatically. A Sonardyne SPRINT system was installed on one of Oceaneering’s Maxximum ROVs and integrated with a Sonardyne Ranger 2 Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) system for acoustic aiding of the Inertial Navigation System (INS). The trials took place in the Gulf of Mexico in water depths of 3,057 metres (10,030 ft) and results showed that continuous hovering of the... (read more)
