Will Hydrographic Offices Rise to the Challenge Of Precision Navigation?

As the size and capacity of vessels entering our ports continue to increase, mariners are challenged with navigating in increasingly constrained spaces. Mariners are demanding more accurate and higher resolution data as ports push the limits of their sea room to compete for megacarriers. This demand creates an opportunity for Hydrographic Offices to provide new products for precision navigation. The demand calls out for the standardisation of data formats to enable interoperability. Rear Admiral Gerd Glang, Office of Coast Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA. For NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey, building a product that provides decision-making tools necessary... (read more)

Kongsberg Adds Hydrographic Equipment to Portfolio

The EA440 singlebeam echosounder is developed for hydrographic use in shallow to medium-depth waters. It supports portable and hull-mounted sidescan and sub-bottom light for shallow waters. Kongsberg Maritime has also presented the portable acoustic positioning system µPAP (MicroPAP) for tracking ROVs, tow fish, divers and other subsea objects. With the EA440, users can cover several applications with a single system. Instead of running separate systems with synchronisation issues the EA440 can cover different applications simultaneously. Individual transducer channels may also be reprogrammed to use different frequency band. Up to eight high-power transceivers can operate simultaneously from the EA440 echo sounder.... (read more)

Planet Ocean to Distribute Seastick

Planet Ocean has announced its partnership with Italian autonomous underwater vehicle manufacturer GABRI covering the UK and Ireland. The GABRI Seastick AUV incorporates several features that set it apart as an AUV and it can also be used with a tether turning it into a powerful remotely operated vehicle. The all-plastic construction gives it an extremely low magnetic signature. Together with the traditional forward dive controls and stern rudders the SEASTICK incorporates two, variable pitch thrusters using low power, silent, frictionless, magnetic induction motors which allow hovering and vertical movement in the water column. Fully customisable payload drawers and choice... (read more)

Multipurpose Subsea Support Vessel

SENER, Spain, is developing a multipurpose subsea support vessel especially designed for subsea ROV (remoted-operated vehicle) light construction duties, for worldwide service. The ship will have a length overall of more than 112m, a length between perpendiculars longer than 100m and a breadth of 22m. The depth to main deck will be 9m while the draft will have more than 7m. In total, it will be able to accommodate 110 persons on board. The vessel will incorporate the following capacities: two FP (Fixed Pitch) Azimuthal main propellers of Diesel electric propulsion, two FP tunnel thrusters and one FP retractable Azimuthal...
