UKHO Hydrographic Database Solution

EDS, as a prime contractor, and CARIS, as the sub-contractorhave been selected for the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) Hydrographic Database (HDB) Project. Through the HDB Project, EDS and CARIS will merge Workflow Management technologies together with Bathy DataBASE and Hydrographic Production Database (HPD) software to manage and create paper and electronic chart products. This will lead to an enterprise production environment where multiple products are created and updated from a centrally managed source. The United Kingdom is the nineteenth nation to adopt HPD in their hydrographic production workflow, indicating further industry acceptance of CARIS’ unique database-driven approach to data... A Universal Hydrographic Database

In search of ‘The Holy Grail’
The idea of a Universal Hydrographic Database is well known within the hydrographic community. Years of discussion and technological development have made UHD an attractive goal for those striving to improve the quality of navigation products. As seekers of this ‘Holy Grail’, the authors dare to suggest requirements for such a database and even analyse approaches to implementation. The main task for a HO is, as stated in regulation 9 of SOLAS Chapter V, to provide for safe navigation within its zone of responsibility. All other tasks are just incremental steps toward fulfilling this main objective. They include survey, production... (read more)

New Feature Objects Database

HydroService AS has launched next-generation dKart Feature Objects Database software (dKart FODB 2.1) for use with the dKart Office ENC and Paper chart production system. dKart FODB is intended for centralised handling of scale-independent objects information: aids to navigation, traffic separation schemes, pipelines, etc. The benefits of such an ‘enhanced NavAids database’ are that any scale-independent object (e.g. buoy) that belongs to several charts is created/edited only once - in the database. Applied up-dates/changes are distributed to affected charts in an automated way. (read more)

Integrated Database Production Environment

New Data Management Technology at CHS
Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) recognises the need to improve its processes for data management and product creation to meet the high standards expected by the hydrographic community. From a task rationalisation perspective, CHS needs to reduce production steps, data manipulation and associated errors, and time spent on production process checks. The adoption of database-driven technology was identified to be the key to answering these expectations. CHS has chosen the latest tools developed by Caris to help reach the goal of improving processes for the management of data (points, lines and bathymetry) while maintaining its mission of producing legal nautical documents... Tides Database Upgrade for SHOM

A major upgrade of CherSoft’s TdB (Tides Database) has been completed by the Service hydrographique et océanographique de la marine (SHOM), France. The upgrade to TdB version 2.5 provides a complete workflow for managing all of SHOM’s tidal stream data in addition to the existing tide height data that has been managed using TdB since 2010. The new tidal stream facilities in TdB include •   Management of multi depth Eulerian tidal stream data and meta data and reference ports •   Data import from point and profiling stream gauges •   Quality assurance for tidal stream data •   Numerous types of graphical... CARIS Demos Bathy DataBase 3.1

During Ocean Business, CARIS officially launched and demoed the new version of Bathy DataBase 3.1 which as a new feature supports Oracle 11g. Delegates interested to see the new development could witness the transfer and use of data and metadata all over the world.   Specialists could see how data can be zoomed in (and at thattime get more detailed like on Google maps which makes it possible to manage big sets of data without having to transfer data in a higher density than necessary, which is useful when handling the expanding volumes of sonar and Lidar data. The data... (read more)

New release Bathy DataBASE 3.1

The latest release Bathy DataBASE 3.1 from CARIS now works with Oracle Spatial 11g, utilising the GeoRaster and geo point-cloud data structures for storage. Oracle Spatial has been specifically designed to meet the needs of advanced geographic information system applications. CARIS continues to meet demands for robust and scaleable data management for the storage and analysis of expanding volumes of sonar and Lidar data.   This latest release of Bathy DataBASE expands the database system options available to clients following last year’s release of Bathy DataBASE 3.0, which offered the open source PostgreSQL database for backend storage. The PostgreSQL database... (read more)
