The Art of Bathymetry

Using 3D Printer Technology to Represent Survey Information
Great advancements have been made in three dimensional printing over the last few years and have made an impressionable impact across a variety of industries. 3D printings’ versatility can be incorporated into any industry that has some form of three dimensional design. An exciting application is to model point clouds from survey techniques to create three dimensional scaled models for visualisation and communication. In this article we will explore a new medium using 3D printed technology.  Over the last few years great advancements have been made to all forms of surveying in three dimensional data capture, whether it be multibeam... Kraken to Receive CAD400,000 Order from Major European Defence Contractor

Kraken Sonar Systems Inc. has invoiced a major European defence contractor for over CAD400,000. Proceeds are expected to be received during Q2 2016. Kraken recently provided an AquaPix Miniature Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar (MINSAS) for integration and sea trials on the customer’s autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). Karl Kenny, Kraken president and chief executive officer, said that navies around the world rely upon their suppliers to provide the best underwater systems and more defence contractors are depending upon Kraken to provide innovative underwater technology solutions. MINSAS MINSAS is an advanced sonar designed for operational depths up to 6,000m. The system integrates... (read more)

Canadian-UK Collaboration for Tidal Sensor Technologies

Canadian and British researchers will join forces to collaborate on two projects in developing new sensing technologies for tidal energy applications. The two project teams each feature industry and academic expertise from Canada and the UK and will introduce environmental monitoring and measurement sensor systems aiming to reduce risk and uncertainties associated with the deployment and operation of in-stream tidal devices. Sensor deployment and testing will be carried out in both Canadian and UK waters. Additional expected outcomes are to build Nova Scotia technical capacity in tidal energy and to contribute to the sector’s emerging global supply chain. The two... (read more)

C-Scape Software Upgrade

C-Nav, USA, has introduced an upgraded version of its C-Scape software. The updated software includes enhanced control functions for all C-Nav receivers, improved AutoCAD support and advanced graphics capabilities. Enhancements, such as the SIMOPS feature, add an additional safety layer to operations and the graphics display can be used with manual controls in the unlikely event of total failure of the DP system. The software requires minimal installation and operation training; a simulator device is available for crew training. C-Scape provides independent, real-time monitoring of dynamic positioning (DP) systems, while simultaneously providing operations overview of other vessels infield and subsea... (read more)

Hydrographic Survey Charting Using GIS

PD Ports is streamlining the way it shares hydrographic data by using GIS software from British software developer, Cadcorp, at Teesport. Handling around 40 million tons of cargo per annum, Teesport is a major deep-water complex and one of the largest container ports in the north of England. The first priority is to ensure the safe movement of the considerable amount of river traffic handling that cargo. Teesport relies a lot on hydrographic survey charts which provide an up-to-date record of the depth of the river in berths, approaches and channels. Captain Jerry Drewitt, Harbour Master for Teesport and Hartlepool,... (read more)

3D Sonar Visualisation Software for ROVs

CodaOctupus, UK, has released version 2 of the Vantage software, a visualisation software suite for the Dimension 3D sonar specifically targeted at ROV-centric applications. The key new features in Version 2 include: new 3D XYZ Binned Profiler Output allows fantastic utility of the Dimension 3D sonar to provide complete profile XYZ data over a selectable slice ahead of the ROV with real-time binning options optimised for seabed surface generation or seabed with vertical features. Similar to the 3D XYZ Data Visual Export feature, incoming navigation is used when available to provide a complete coverage map, when no navigation data is... (read more)

Sharing Spatial Data

Computer Aided Development Corporation Ltd (Cadcorp)
Cadcorp is a British software development company focused on geographic information systems (GIS) and web mapping software. From its headquarters in Stevenage, UK, Cadcorp is growing both its direct and indirect sales into the hydrographic market – particularly with port and harbour authorities. Cadcorp was originally founded in 1989 to develop a CAD product. Cadcorp sold the product outright in 1994, and started the development of a family of Microsoft Windows-based GIS products. The first release of the Cadcorp Spatial Information System (Cadcorp SIS) was in 1995.Mike O’Neil, CEO and founder of Cadcorp, recalls the early years. ”We were able... (read more)

A New Solution for Subsea Metrology

Combination of Acoustics and Photogrammetry
Invariably, metrology is required at the critical stages of field development and the main goal for improvement is to reduce the time taken for acquiring data. The technique discussed offers significant improvements in terms of time and required equipment. Offshore Construction During offshore construction several structures have to be interconnected by means of spools or jumpers. In order to determine the dimensions and relative attitudes of the connections, surveyors deploy ROV-mounted instrumentation. IMCA S019 Guidance on Subsea Metrology offers the following combined accuracy guideline: 50mm to 150mm in X,Y and Z axis 0.5° to 1° for relative pitch, roll and heading.... (read more)
