Sonar Aid in Chilean Chart Production

Servico Hidrografico y Oceanografico de la Armada de Chile (The Chilean Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service, or SHOA) has taken delivery of a new Reson sonar system, the second such system the organisation has implemented. The complete system will be installed on the vessel ALBATROSS, and will aid the Chilean Navy with the development of new nautical cartography for Chilean Waters, including electronic charts.   The total system comprises a Sea Bat 7125-E high resolution multibeam sonar, a S410 Deepwater hydrographic and broadband echosounder, and a PDS2000 software package. The SeaBat7125-E provides high-resolution bathymetry and imagery data in real time... (read more)

Tritech StarFish for Z-Boat 1800

The Oceanscience Group has unveiled the first Z-Boat 1800 remotely operated survey boat with integrated sidescan sonar, from Tritech International. The new boat provides a shore operator with real-time high-definition sidescan imagery from Tritech’s StarFish 990F sidescan on a portable 1.8m surface vessel. The StarFish sidescan is attached to a special skeg (keel fin) under the Z-Boat, eliminating the need for a dedicated hull mounted transducer. In addition, the compact size of the StarFish topside box means that a single or dual frequency single-beam echosounder can still be accommodated on the Z-Boat. Adrian McDonald, Oceanscience Group, Z-boat, commented that the... (read more)

Next-generation Echosounders for Canadian Victoria Class Submarine Fleet

Knudsen Engineering has announced a two-year contract awarded by the Canadian Dept. of National Defence for the supply of ruggedised echosounders to replace the dry end portion of the deep and shallow echosounders currently fitted onboard Canada’s Victoria Class Submarine Fleet. Additionally, the contract will include installation and training at the Tactical Weapons System Training Facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Each deliverable set includes recorders, remote displays, associated switches and ancillary dry end equipment. This order comes on the heels of recent sales of the Knudsen 320N Fathometer to the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Foreign Military Sales.... (read more)

Sailing Drone

The HyDrone RCV of Seafloor Systems is a hand-portable, remote controlled hydrographic survey platform. Working in conjunction with the HydroLite portable echosounder kit to conduct bathymetric surveys in ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams, the HyDrone RCV accomplishes the same results as much more expensive radio-controlled survey systems. The HyDrone RCV has a wide profile to avoid tipping, and watertight construction. It’s rugged, lightweight, and is manufactured from high quality marine components. The system is easily disassembled for transport and shipping. Work environments include mines, sewage treatment plants, contaminated lakes, harbours and rivers. The range for radio controlling is 500m, the... (read more)

Swathe Services Offers Sonic 2024

Swathe Services is first to offer the Sonic 2024 Wideband Multibeam Echosounder for hire in the UK. This multibeam echosounder provides users maximum survey flexibility with selectable wideband frequencies from 200kHz to 400kHz. The system architecture, with embedded processor and controller, eliminates bulky processors and interface bottles. The sonar consists of three major components: a compact lightweight projector; a receiver and a very small deck unit Sonar Interface Module (SIM). Third party auxiliary sensors are connected to the SIM and can be supplied with the sensor if required to give a complete system.Additional acquisition software can also be supplied in... (read more)

Valeport's New Sound Velocity Sensor Goes Through-the-Hull

Valeport has just launched a new addition to its range of sound velocity sensors. The Modus SVS Through-Hull is designed for through-the-hull applications. The Modus SVS takes real time measurements, and can also collect data about pressure and temperature as well as sound velocity. By using a clever mounting system, the sensor can simply be pushed from the ship's hull, quickly and efficiently, whilst the vessel is afloat. It's also easy to remove, making cleaning and maintaining the sensor a straightforward task. The sensor is ideal for applications such as the calibration of swath sonars or echosounders mounted on vessels,... (read more)

Sonar to Monitor Gulf Oil Spill

Scientists from Seattle-based BioSonics (USA) are traveling to the Gulf of Mexico where they will use scientific sonar equipment to locate oil spilled as a result of the Deepwater Horizon accident. Working with National Response Corporation, BioSonics staff will utilise echosounders, typically used for fish population and stock assessment, in an unconventional application... the detection of submerged oil. "This represents an exciting new arena for BioSonics and we are proud to associate our company with the spill response efforts in the Gulf", stated BioSonics president, Timothy Acker. Tests for the US Coast Guard Research and Development Center recently demonstrated that... (read more)

Octans for Survey Training

Hydrography students at the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB) in the Netherlands deploy former Rijkswaterstaat survey vessel Octans for many practical exercises in accordance with FIG/IHO guidelines. Formerly based at Amsterdam, training possibilities at Terschelling have been much enhanced since the vessel became available last summer. At least once weekly Octans leaves her berth for nautical and hydrographic training sessions. The vessel is well maintained and slowly but surely becoming equipped with mainly secondhand but fully operational survey gear. Rijkswaterstaat provided the use of a Simrad EM950 multi-beam echosounder, which was re-installed by Radio Holland. Precision surveys are carried out... (read more)
