MOSAiC Arctic Expedition Reaches North Pole

On 19 August 2020, the world’s largest and longest polar research expedition – known as MOSAiC – reached the North Pole after making an unplanned detour owing to lighter than usual sea-ice conditions. The expedition is now entering its final stage, during which researchers will study the last piece of the Arctic puzzle: the growth of new sea ice marking the end of the summer season. Unmanned Boat Used in High-salinity Brine Lake

In early July 2020, an OceanAlpha ME120 unmanned surface vessel (USV) joined the national potash mining project in Lop Nur in the Chinese province of Xinjiang to conduct routine bathymetric surveys. Lop Nur used to be the largest lake in north-western China before it dried up in 1972. Known as the ‘Sea of Death’, Lop Nur is located in the south-eastern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Fugro Wins ROV Services Contracts with Petrobras in Brazil

In partnership with Solstad and Oceanpact, Fugro has been awarded three long-term contracts by Petrobras to provide remotely operated vehicle (ROV) services for a variety of subsea activities in Brazil. All three contracts are for three-year fixed periods with additional one-year options. Fugro will provide a total of five work class ROVs for these contracts, each outfitted with tooling and survey spreads that are operational in water depths of up to 3,000m. QPS Adds Direct FarSounder Integration to Qinsy

Quality Positioning Services (QPS), specialized in maritime geomatics software and services, has integrated FarSounder’s Argos Forward Looking Sonars (FLS) into their Qinsy survey software package. Argos sonar users are now able to display their FLS bathymetric data in the Qinsy platform along with the rest of the survey data they are capturing. TDI-Brooks Maps the Liberty Ship Reef Site George Vancouver

TDI-Brooks recently mapped the Liberty Ship George Vancouver Reef off Freeport, Texas while out on a seabed survey project with the RV Brooks McCall. The multiple multi-phase geophysical and geotechnical site surveys programme consisted of pipeline routing and subsea structures to facilitate route and project design for offshore developers. Equipment used to map the ship was a Teledyne Reson SeaBat T-20 multibeam sonar with integrated Applanix POSMV for Motion. Fugro’s ROV Survey and Monitoring Help Install World’s Longest Subsea Interconnector

Fugro has completed a contract for Nexans to provide remotely operated vehicle (ROV) survey and monitoring support services to lay the North Sea Link cable through a mountain and along a lake bed in Norway. National Grid NSN Link and Statnett are building an electricity interconnector between Kvilldal in Norway and Blyth in the UK which, on completion, will be the longest subsea interconnector in the world.
