GLONASS, GPS and GALILEO Present and Future Aspects

Global Navigation and Hydrography is the theme of this issue. GALILEO has received a ‘green light’, GPS has planned some important improvements and GLONASS has entered on a significant development programme. Time for HI to ask experts involved in each GNSS for their opinion on certain topics and finally to put the question: ‘What is in it all for us surveyors?’ The experts interviewed are: Dr Vidal Ashkenazi (GALILEO), Dr Keith McDonald (GPS) and Dr Boris Shebshaevich (GLONASS). 1997-2007: A Decade of Developments in Hydrography

We all know what is the oldest profession in the world. The second oldest is probably that of land surveyor: Adam undoubtedly wanted to stake out the boundaries of paradise in order to know what was and was not his. Paradise, or the Garden of Eden, was to be found in the land of the Euphrates and Tigris, where these two rivers converge at the town of Qurna in the present Shatt al Arab. World's First Fully Autonomous Hydrographic Survey

No Line Plan, No Boat Crew, Just Sensors
During September 2017, the world’s first autonomous hydrographic survey was performed. 'Autonomous' means not by remote control, but rather that the autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) used guidance from survey software to run pre-planned survey lines or automatically generated lines based on sonar coverage, with human interaction possible but not required. The Channel Coastal Observatory (CCO) commissioned 4D Ocean to undertake a hydrographic survey of the seabed offshore of Hurst Spit, Western Solent, using a SeaRobotics ASV 2.5. On Friday 8 June 2007, the bulk carrierPasha Bulkerran aground in heavy storm conditions on one of Newcastle’s most famous surfing beaches, Nobbys, near the entrance to Newcastle Harbour in New South Wales, Australia. As part of the large-scale salvage operation, the Survey Section of Newcastle Port Corporation and the Coastal Unit of the Department of Environment and Climate Change were called on to use their high-tech survey systems to provide bathymetry, navigation support and other services to the salvors. PPVRS Rushes in a New Era for Hydrographic Surveying

This paper describes a technique for centimetric positioning in hydrographic surveying using a network of GPS base stations to determine ephemeris, clock and atmospheric errors at the rover location. This technique uses the GPS observations from a Virtual Reference Station to compute a tightly integrated GPS/Inertial solution, with minimum baselines of over 100km.<P> Today’s primary positioningtechnique for near-shore (within 100km) marine hydrography is based on the integration of GPS and inertial navigation systems (INS). Waterside Mapping

Laser scanning and bathymetric side-scan sonar represent the cutting edge of environmental survey technology. Over the last few years, we have tested the integration of these two methodologies, carrying out a number of high-resolution surveys on the Po River, the Venice canals and various Italian harbours. Bathymetric surveys were conducted using a SEA SWATHplus-H wide-swath sonar. An Optech ILRIS-3D terrestrial laser scanner was used to scan the areas above water level.
