GLONASS, GPS and GALILEO Present and Future Aspects

Global Navigation and Hydrography is the theme of this issue. GALILEO has received a ‘green light’, GPS has planned some important improvements and GLONASS has entered on a significant development programme. Time for HI to ask experts involved in each GNSS for their opinion on certain topics and finally to put the question: ‘What is in it all for us surveyors?’ The experts interviewed are: Dr Vidal Ashkenazi (GALILEO), Dr Keith McDonald (GPS) and Dr Boris Shebshaevich (GLONASS). We all know what is the oldest profession in the world. The second oldest is probably that of land surveyor: Adam undoubtedly wanted to stake out the boundaries of paradise in order to know what was and was not his. The ability to conduct inshore hydrographic surveys has always been dependent on small boats and the seamanship of those conducting the surveys. The ongoing WiMUST (Widely scalable Mobile Underwater Sonar Technology) project aims to design and test a system of cooperating autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that would simplify seismic surveying and offer significant advantages over modern streamer-towing operations. Seismic surveys are a crucial part of offshore exploration, producing detailed imagery of sub-bottom rock formations that enables the location and evaluation of oil and gas deposits. In 2009, a research project was implemented to study the potential socio-economic impacts of climate change upon coastal communities in Canada and the Caribbean. Grande Riviere in Trinidad and Tobago, one of the study sites, is an important nesting site for leatherback turtles. Turtle watching, part of eco-tourism conducted in that part of the country, is an important source of income for the community. Waterside Mapping

Laser scanning and bathymetric side-scan sonar represent the cutting edge of environmental survey technology. Over the last few years, we have tested the integration of these two methodologies, carrying out a number of high-resolution surveys on the Po River, the Venice canals and various Italian harbours. Bathymetric surveys were conducted using a SEA SWATHplus-H wide-swath sonar. An Optech ILRIS-3D terrestrial laser scanner was used to scan the areas above water level. The ROV in Nearshore Site Investigation

Nearshore engineering surveys are undertaken for the purpose of gathering information pertaining to the bathymetry and morphology of the seabed, along with the geotechnical characteristics and geophysical profiles of the sub-stratum. Standard practice tends to involve a low-resolution bathymetric and sub-bottom survey of the approximate area of interest, followed by a higher-resolution, site-specific investigation entailing detailed analysis of the location and form of the materials present.
