Hydrographic Society of South Africa

Recent News
Our monthly meetings continue as planned with increased turnout and interest from existing and new members. The society meets at 18:00hrs on the last Tuesday of the month at Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town. Non-members / overseas visitors are very welcome to attend.

Environmental matters have been the flavour of our most recent meetings with a presentation by Thales GeoSolutions Metocean Division on Current, Water and Sediment Sampling, offshore Brazil and on a more local flavour, the Institute of Maritime Technology (IMT) presented a very polished presentation on the Southern Africa Seawatch buoy monitoring system which forms part of
the regional component of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). The first of a number of these buoys is currently deployed in False Bay, near Simon’s Town, on a trail basis.

2002 has been a year of revival for the HSSA and it was concluded that the Society had now achieved its initial goals in reviving interest and providing a forum for discussions on marine matters, on a monthly basis. The next phase of growth for the Society is to hold an Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for the end of November 2002. The new committee will be tasked to take the Society into 2003 and continue the growth pattern established in 2002.
